A&M-SA celebrates Women's History Month

In honor of Women's History Month, A&M-San Antonio hosted a special panel series, Women in the Military: Transitions, featuring remarkable women leaders speaking about the history of women in the military on Saturday, March 21. This military women's panel provided insightful advice from the distinguished panelists about their successful transition from military service to a civilian career and return to college.

Panel members included: Angela "Angie" Salinas, Maj Gen U.S. Marine Corps (Ret), Admiral Nimitz Foundation Board Member; Gail L. Hathaway, CAPT U.S. Navy (Ret), Executive Director of Workforce Solutions Alamo; Lisa C. Firmin, COL U.S. Air Force (Ret), Associate Provost for Diversity and Recruitment at the University of Texas at San Antonio, and; Tish McCullough, SFC U.S. Army (Ret), Military Veteran Peer Network and Training Specialist for the Texas Veterans Commission.

Borderlands Symposium tackles immigration photoBorderlands Symposium tackles immigration

The second session of the running U.S.-Mexico Borderlands Symposium, hosted at the Educational & Cultural Arts Center on Saturday, March 28, was focused on immigration and border security issues. Panelists included Dr. Frances Galan, visiting assistant professor of history, spoke on the history of the borderline; Andrew Mellow from the Intelligence Unit of the Texas Department of Public Safety addressed law enforcement along the U.S.-Mexico border; Staff Attorney Marisa Bono from the Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund spoke about immigration policy and legislative right, and; Benjamin Rubio, case manager at St. Joseph's Children Home, presented on DREAMERS, Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors.

Nearly a hundred guests attended the panel session and the Symposium was covered by Time Warner Cable.


University hosts Science Olympiad

The Texas A&M-San Antonio Biology program hosted the San Antonio Regional Science Olympiad on Saturday, March 21 on Main Campus for the 4th year running. The Olympiad was a day-long event comprised of 28 competitions based in the STEM fields, in which members of middle and high school teams competed for a chance to advance to the Texas State Science Olympiad in College Station at the end of April.

300 students, divided into 20 teams of 15 students from middle and high schools across the state of Texas, attended this year's San Antonio Regional Olympiad. The top two teams in each division will advance to the State competition and the top team in each division at State will have the opportunity to compete at the National Science Olympiad in May.

History Club and students recognized by Texas State Historical Association

The A&M-SA History Club, a chapter of the Walter Prescott Webb Society, was awarded Chapter of the Year in the university division at the Texas State Historical Association annual meeting in Corpus Christi from March 5-7. Additionally, two students placed in the C.M. Caldwell Memorial Awards for Excellence in History upper-level competition. Jessica Ceeko won 2nd place for her paper, "The Effect of the Mexican Revolution on San Antonio," and Miguel Rodriguez placed 3rd for his paper,"Aguileras Aztecas: Mexico's Forgotten Contribution to World War II." Both of their papers will be considered for publication in the Touchstone, the undergraduate research journal of the Walter Prescott Webb Society.


A&M-SA students attend human resources competition

Undergraduate students from the Society for Human Resources Management (SHRM), Katrina Reyna, Desiree Dupont and Hailey Van Dam, placed 7th at the 2015 SHRM Student Case Competition and Career Summit in Ontario, California during the students' Spring Break last week. The A&M-SA team competed against teams from over 15 universities.

The SHRM Case Competition is an event that provides a realistic preview for students of the types of problems that students may eventually encounter in the workplace. The case scenarios reviewed during the competition focused on any number of HR issues and required strategic thinking, ethical decision-making and strong leadership and presentation skills. Following the competition was a career summit highlighting strategies for internships, mentorships and networking. Students were provided opportunities to participate in career strategy sessions and onsite mentoring with HR professions from across the country.

Promoting good health and wellness on campus

The Campus Activities Board, Counseling and Wellness, Human Resources and Student Activities co-sponsored the spring Health and Wellness Fair, hosted at Brooks City-Base on March 3 and Main Campus on March 4. Jaguars had the opportunity to visit with companies that promote good health. To tie in with the Heath Fair on Main Campus, the Christus Santa Rosa Hospital sent a mobile Mammography Unit for breast cancer screenings.

Over 150 students, faculty and staff attended the two-day Health and Wellness Fair, including Dr. Cynthia Teniente-Matson, who visited with students and the health information booths.

The Educational & Cultural Arts Center's upcoming name change was covered by the San Antonio Express-News.

A&M-SA students discuss the movement of the "Campus Carry" Bill from the Texas Senate to the House this week on WOAI News 4 San Antonio.

Dr. Dennis Elam, associate professor of accounting, was quoted in the Express-News article "Coping with an oil price crash."

A&M-SA's Military Community Development office was mentioned by KSAT as one of the participating organizations in the Bexar County Precinct 1 Community Health and Education Fair.
